As the cost of living continues to rise, electricity bills remain one of the major monthly expenses for many Malaysian households.
To help ease the financial burden of eligible families, the Malaysian Government introduced the Program Rebat Bil Elektrik RM40, which provides up to RM40 in monthly electricity bill rebates for qualified households.
This article explains what the programme is, who may qualify, and how to check your eligibility.
What Is the RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate?
The Program Rebat Bil Elektrik RM40 is a Government assistance programme that provides eligible households with a monthly rebate of up to RM40 on their residential electricity bills.
The rebate amount depends on your monthly electricity usage.
For example:
- Electricity bill of RM28 → RM28 rebate (Pay RM0)
- Electricity bill of RM40 → RM40 rebate (Pay RM0)
- Electricity bill of RM65 → RM40 rebate (Pay RM25)
The maximum rebate is RM40 per month. Any unused rebate amount will not be carried forward to the following month.

Who Is Eligible?
According to the Government’s eligibility criteria, applicants generally must meet the following requirements:
- Malaysian Citizen
Applicants must be Malaysian citizens. - Registered and Verified under eKasih
Eligible applicants are generally households registered and verified under the Government’s eKasih database.
Eligibility is determined based on the Government’s official assessment and household information maintained in the eKasih system. - Residential (Domestic) Electricity Account
The rebate applies to Domestic electricity accounts only.
Commercial or industrial electricity accounts are not eligible. - One Rebate per Head of Household
Each eligible Head of Household (KIR) is entitled to one residential electricity account rebate only.

How to Check Your Eligibility?
Many people assume they need to submit an application directly to TNB, SESB or SEB.
In reality, the first step is to check your eligibility online.

Simply enter your MyKad number to find out whether you qualify for the RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate.
What Should You Do If You’re Eligible?
Once your eligibility is confirmed, ensure that your residential electricity account is correctly linked with your electricity provider.
Depending on your location, your electricity provider may be:
- Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)
- Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd. (SESB)
- Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB)
Once verification has been completed, the rebate will be reflected automatically on your monthly electricity bill.
There is no need to submit a new application every month.

What If You’re Not Eligible?
If your eligibility check indicates that you do not currently qualify, but your household is genuinely experiencing financial hardship, you may wish to explore eKasih registration.
eKasih is the Government’s national database used to identify households that require financial assistance.
Registration does not automatically guarantee approval for the RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate. Final eligibility is subject to the Government’s assessment and the latest eKasih verification.
